Product Induction
SS400 (JIS Standard) channel steel is a carbon-alloyed low-alloy hot-rolled channel steel with a tensile strength of 400 MPa and a yield strength of 235 MPa. It features a broader carbon and manganese content range compared to standard grades, combining the cost-effectiveness of carbon steel with the strength of low-alloy steel. This makes it the preferred open-section steel for applications such as building frameworks, equipment supports, and vehicle longitudinal beams.

Advantages of SS400:
1. Excellent weldability: With carbon content C≈0.32, no preheating is required on-site for thickness ≤20 mm. Standard welding wire enables all-position welding.
2. Good formability: Cold bending, stamping, and shearing performance comparable to Q235B, suitable for secondary stamped parts and irregularly bent components.
3. High dimensional accuracy: JIS tolerances allow ±1.5 mm leg width deviation, ±0.6 mm web thickness deviation, and ≤0.2% straightness deviation, facilitating rapid bolted connections in prefabricated steel structures.
4. Low overall cost: Priced approximately ¥100-150 per ton lower than domestic Q355B channel steel while offering strength one grade higher than Q235, delivering outstanding cost-effectiveness.
Channel Steel Production Process
1. Raw Material Preparation: Select continuous cast low-carbon square billets or rectangular billets to prevent surface crack propagation.
2. Heating: Raise temperature to 1200–1250°C with a soaking time ≥30 min. Ensure horizontal temperature variation ≤30°C at exit to provide uniform austenitic structure for subsequent rough rolling.
3. Rough and finish rolling.
4. Controlled cooling: After hot rolling, air-cool on a cooling bed to below 300°C, equivalent to normalizing treatment. For higher strength requirements, perform online tempering at 600°C to refine ferrite grain size by 1–2 grades.
5. Straightening and cutting to length: Repeated bending on a nine-roll hot straightening machine achieves straightness ≤1 mm/5 m. Subsequently cold-cut to lengths of 6–12 m with cut bevel ≤2 mm; end burrs automatically ground.
6. Surface Inspection and Final Acceptance:Randomly inspect dimensions, mechanical properties, and bend. Issue quality certificates upon passing inspection for warehouse acceptance.
7. Optional Post-Processing: Hot-dip galvanizing, pickling, and other surface treatments.

FAQ
Q: For the same height, are wider legs and thicker webs always better?
A: Not necessarily. Wider legs provide greater lateral stability, and thicker webs enhance shear and compression resistance. However, both self-weight and cost increase linearly. During design, calculate the minimum section modulus by subtracting shear force from bending moment to avoid overdesign.
Q: What are the most common materials for channel steel?
A: Q235B/SS400 (mild carbon steel, low cost, easy to weld); Q345B (yield strength 345 MPa, 15% weight reduction); Q345C/D or 20MnVK (fatigue resistance, -40°C impact).
Q: How should zinc coating thickness be selected?
A: In dry environments, zinc coating ≥45 µm; in coastal or high-humidity areas: ≥65 µm. Alternatively, use weathering steel channel sections with a zinc-aluminum-magnesium coating for double the service life.
Q: Can channel steel be punched?
A: Yes, but the hole diameter must be ≤ 1.1 times the web thickness and the hole spacing ≥ 3d to avoid significant weakening of the cross-section. Hot punching at 550-600°C produces minimal oxide scale on hole walls and yields a 20% higher fatigue life than cold punching.
Q: Are all stock lengths 6 m?
A: Standard domestic lengths are 6 m, 9 m, and 12 m. JIS/EN standard lengths can be custom-cut from 4 to 18 m.
Q:Are You Trading Company or Manufacturer ?
A: We are manufacturer, and We are the factory for Metal Steel Fabrication, Laser Cutting, Bending, Welding, Material Cutting into Length, Machining, all Types of Structures and parts can be produced based on your drawings.
