A36, Q235C, and Q235D Each Have Their own Core Advantages
A36, as a versatile steel plate, offers strength and ductility suitable for most construction, bridge, and general machinery applications. Its low carbon content (C ≤ 0.25%) combined with sufficient manganese (0.8-1.2%) eliminates the need for preheating during welding, enhancing work efficiency. With a comprehensive range of specifications, ample stock availability, and competitive pricing, it stands as the preferred choice for steel plate coil material.
Q235C surpasses Q235B with enhanced low-temperature toughness, offering greater reliability for winter construction or mildly cold environments. It is suitable for cold bending, stamping, cold-formed steel sections, and prefabricated components. With high plasticity, it can be used in scaffolding, temporary supports, shells, and other applications requiring high deformation capacity.
Q235D exhibits the strictest impurity control among the three grades, inherently resistant to brittle fracture; Under identical yield strength conditions of 235 MPa, its impact value more than doubles that of Q235C, offering enhanced safety in “high vibration + low temperature” combined operating conditions such as dynamic loads, crane girders, and mining machinery supports. Weld cold cracking sensitivity is further reduced, enabling room-temperature welding even for thick plates. This eliminates the need for preheating/post-heating processes, resulting in lower overall construction costs compared to lower-grade steels requiring preheating.

FAQ
Q:Which has higher strength: A36 or Q235C/D?
A:The yield strength of A36 is ≥250 MPa, slightly higher than that of Q235C/D (≥235 MPa).
Q:What temperature environments are Q235C and Q235D suitable for?
A:Q235C: Suitable for environments at or above 0°C.
Q235D: Suitable for environments at or above -20°C.
Q:Can A36 replace Q235C or Q235D?
A:For normal temperature applications without mandatory impact requirements, substitution is permissible.
If the design specifies low-temperature impact requirements (e.g., -20°C), A36 does not meet the toughness standards of Q235D and is therefore not recommended for substitution.
Q:How is the weldability of these three types of steel?
A: All three are low-carbon steels with good weldability. Among them,Q235C/D contains fewer impurities and is more suitable for critical welded structures.
Q: How are prices ranked?
A: Generally: Q235D > Q235C > A36. Among these, Q235D has slightly higher costs due to composition control and low-temperature impact requirements; A36 is relatively cheaper due to its high market availability.
