Understanding DX51D+AZ80

DX51D designates cold-forming quality substrate steel per EN 10346. The low-carbon chemistry and annealed grain structure provide excellent press-brake formability, roll-forming consistency, and deep-draw capability for complex profiles. Yield strength stays below 280 MPa, ensuring the material bends and shapes without cracking or springback issues.
+AZ80 specifies an aluminum-zinc alloy coating mass of 80 grams per square meter total on both surfaces. This lighter coating weight compared to AZ120 or AZ150 reduces material cost while retaining the fundamental barrier and sacrificial protection of the 55% Al / 43.4% Zn / 1.6% Si alloy system. AZ80 is the economical choice for controlled indoor environments, low-corrosion climates, and applications where the organic paint layer provides the primary defense.

Manufacturing Process

Substrate Preparation: Galvalume-coated coil enters the paint line and passes through alkaline cleaning, brushing, and deionized water rinsing to remove all oils, residues, and surface contaminants. The AZ coating is lightly passivated to optimize paint adhesion.
Primer Application: A corrosion-inhibiting primer is roll-coated onto both surfaces and cured in an induction or convection oven. The primer bonds chemically to the AZ layer and provides the foundation for topcoat adhesion.
Topcoat Application: The finish coat is precisely applied by reverse-roll coater to achieve uniform film thickness across the full strip width. Color is monitored continuously with spectrophotometric sensors.
Curing: The painted strip passes through a controlled-temperature curing oven where the coating cross-links and hardens. Peak metal temperature and dwell time are optimized per paint chemistry.
Cooling & Inspection: Controlled cooling sets the coating hardness. Automated inspection systems detect color variation, coating defects, dirt inclusions, and thickness deviations. Approved material is tension-leveled for flatness and precision-reeled.

Performance Characteristics

Weather Resistance: SMP and PVDF systems resist fading, chalking, and gloss loss under prolonged UV exposure. Color change Delta E typically remains below 3 after 10 years for PVDF in moderate climates.
Corrosion Resistance: The AZ substrate plus organic barrier provides dual protection. Even if the paint is scratched, the galvalume layer continues protecting the steel. Salt-spray resistance exceeds 500 hours to scribe creep for properly coated systems.
Formability: The paint system is formulated to flex with the substrate during roll forming, press braking, and profiling without cracking, flaking, or loss of adhesion. Bend radii of 0T to 2T are achievable depending on thickness and paint system.
Heat Resistance: Galvalume substrate withstands temperatures up to 315°C without coating degradation, making it suitable for heat-exposed applications where organic coatings on galvanized steel would fail.
Chemical Resistance: PVDF systems resist industrial pollutants, acid rain, and salt spray. All systems tolerate mild alkalis and cleaning agents.
